Vital Signs: Healthcare Sector Outlook: September 2026

Healthcare markets reopened meaningfully in H1 2026, but selectivity persisted as M&A, clinical catalysts and China-origin BD drove momentum while rates and policy remain key go-forward risks

Healthcare Market Momentum, Policy Shifts & Strategic Considerations

The latest Vital Signs report from DNB Carnegie Back Bay examines the continued reopening of healthcare markets, and the factors that will determine whether that momentum will carry into 2027.

Key takeaways include:

  • Healthcare markets gained momentum: The XBI rose ~30% in H1 2026, outperforming the S&P 500 by ~21%, as strong clinical catalysts and M&A brought capital back into the sector

  • Dealmaking accelerated: Healthcare M&A reached ~$191B across 86 transactions in H1, while China-origin innovation continued to reshape licensing, with Chinese biotechs behind the four largest licensing deals

  • Financing conditions improved—but remain selective: 66 healthcare IPOs raised ~$11.2B, follow-ons reached ~$26.9B, and venture funding climbed to a three-year high of $17.7B, with capital concentrated around differentiated, catalyst-rich companies

  • Policy and macro risks are increasingly shaping strategy: Interest rates, Medicare negotiation and MFN pricing, tariffs, FDA execution, R&D funding and the midterms are becoming important considerations for financing, BD and M&A planning.

The takeaway? The healthcare markets are open, but not broad. Companies with differentiated data, strategic scarcity, capital runway and policy resilience remain best positioned as the sector looks toward 2027.
